INJECTION MOULD

There are difference processes which are used for moulding and converting plastics into finished products. Injection moulding is the most common way for mass manufacturing plastic products. It is a method of producing objects which is done by the use of an injection machine with thermoplastics. The shape of products is controlled by a confined chamber called a mould.

In principle, injection moulding is simple, melt plastic, inject it into a mould, let it cool and then eject the part, you got it. In reality, injection moulding is a complex process. To have successful parts, it will involve 3 participations, injection machine, injection mould, and the pellets that injected to the mould through injection machine.

First, plastic pellets in the hopper feed into the barrel of the injection unit. Inside the barrel, a screw transports the pellets forward. Heater bands wrapped around the barrel warm up the plastic pellets. In a matter of seconds, the screw injected the molten plastic into the empty part of the mould called the cavity. The mould is quickly cooled, letting the parts solidify, the mould opens and the part is ejected. The mould then closes, and the process repeats over and over again.

Injection moulding makes the wide range of plastic products in use throughout our life. You see the moulded parts in every corner of our life. Examples include table and chairs, pallet, crates, boxes for consumer electronics, containers in housewares, disposable cutlery, interior and exterior components of automotive, etc… The geometry of those parts determines the complexity of an injection mould. Those parts can be made of single or multiple cavities. Multiple cavity mould can have identical parts in each cavity or can be unique to create parts of different geometries as often called family mould. Mould can be simple as open and close in few seconds, or mould can be complicated with movable inserts, angle pins, undercut forming side inserts, inner and outer threaded forming.

The injection moulding process required careful design, including the shape of structure of the part, the material selection for the part and mould, and the properties of the injection mould machine. Toolex’s experts are well experienced and customer focused. We will help to optimize the part design to ensure the best performance of a mould, by supplier customer DFM and mould flow analysis. It is important to take various considerations into account before an actual mould was built. The work we will do in advance preventing us to have more works done afterwards.
