SMC (Sheet Moulding Compound) is a composite material that consists of chopped fibre, thermosetting resin and other additives. It is widely used in the automobile industry to manufacture various automotive components such as bumpers, hoods, engine covers and more. The SMC moulding process involves compressing the SMC into a specific shape using a compression mould.
The SMC moulds are made from high-quality steel or aluminium materials that can withstand high temperatures and pressures during the compression process. The moulds have two halves: one fixed half and one movable half. The moveable half closes onto the fixed half once the SMC has been placed inside.
After closing, heat and pressure are applied to the mould which causes it to cure and harden into its final form. Once complete, the finished part is removed from the mould by opening it up again.
SMC offers several benefits over other materials such as lightweight construction for improved fuel efficiency in automobiles, excellent strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance and more.
