The gate of plastic mould is a channel or orifice connecting the runner with the impression. It has a samll cross-sectional area when compared with the rest of the feed system. This most cross-sectional area is necessary so that:
1)The gate of plastic mould freezes soon after the impressiong is filled so that the injection plunger can be withdraw without the probability of void being created in the molding by suck-back.
2)It allows for simply degating and in some moulds this degating can be automatic.
3)After degating only a samll witness mark remains.
4)Better control of the filling of multi-impressions can be automatic.
5)Packing the impression with materical in excess of that required to compensate for shrinkage is minimized.
The size of the gate can be considered in terms of the gate cross-sectional area and the gate of plastic mould length.the latter beging known as gate land. The optimum size for a gate will depend on a number of factors including the flow characteristics of the material to be moulded, the wall section of the moulding, the volume of material to be injection into the imoression, the temperature of the melt, and the temperature of the mould.
No theoretical size exists for the ideal gate. The gate size chosen in practice for a paricular component is normally based on past experience. However, the reader may not have this experience upon which to base a decision and, therefore,a guide to the dimensions for each gate type is given. The guide applies, except there otherwise stated,to the general case of a moulding with a wall section between 0.75mm(0.030 in) and 4mm(0.127 in)
Balnaced gating:It is often necessary to balance the gates of a multi-impression mould to ensure that the impressions fill simultaneously. This method is adopted when the preferred balanced runner system cannot be used.
